BBC Future Media Seeks Database Technology

The BBC is on the hunt for a supplier to provide it with a NoSQL database for storage and retrieval of its online content.

According to a contract notice in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU), the Broadcaster’s Future Media division requires the solution to provide a persistence layer for many of the platform data service that are used by its websites and apps.

“These platform data services are typically HTTP REST APIs, backed by enterprise databases. These databases must offer high performance, high volume and high availability for a mix of use cases, complexity and traffic patterns,” claims the tender.

“The Data services and their databases as developed and operated by discrete product engineering teams and the database technology must fit with the modern engineering and operation practices of these product engineering teams,” it adds.

The document reveals the BBC intends to have a maximum term of five years, broken down into an initial term of three years, with the option to extend for two further terms of a year each.

It expects the contract value to be between £1m and £5m, beginning around the end of October 2015 until the end of October 2018 for the firm term.

Atos May Advise BBC

The OJEU tender also notes that the BBC pay involve its technology partner, business technology provider Atos, to assist it in the scoping and draft of invitations to tender and the evaluation of tenders.

“However, the final decision as to which is the most economically advantageous by reference to the award criteria will be made by the BBC,” it claims.
