Brighton Introduces PayByPhone, Saves £250k Annually

Sep 11, 2015

Brighton and Hove City Council has adopted a mobile parking application across the area that is saving the local authority around quarter of a million pounds each year.

PayByPhone is used by around 155,000 people in Brighton and Hove, allowing them to adopt cashless technology to pay for parking.

The council has become the tenth largest user of this technology worldwide and is a key part of its plan to remove almost half of the city's cash-based car parking machines.

The old cash machines were becoming too costly for the local authority to run - being a seaside town, the technology was very susceptible to weather damage and repairs were increasingly costly.

In the future, Brighton and Hove plans to remove 600 of its 1400 Pay and Display machines, a move which will take it one step further to becoming a truly connected city.

Users are able to download and register on the app before they leave the house, enabling drivers to save time and money, especially because the app is not just limited to use in Brighton.

To use the system, those parking just simply input the relevant number from signs posted around the car park to pay for their parking.

PayByPhone removes the need for car park users to scramble about looking for the correct cash and because users can top up their time remotely, there is no rushing back to the car park to either leave or grab a new ticket.

No Smartphone? No Problem

Brighton and Hove however, is still offering the means for customers to pay by alternative methods for those who do not have smartphones.

PayByPhone also allows users to pay via the web or SMS and traditional Pay and Display machines will be available in some areas.
