Camden BYOD Adoption Rises By 240%

Camden Council has this week announced it's been able to expand its internal BYOD (bring your own device) scheme by 240% in just two years. 

Private cloud file sharing firm Accellion and mobile device management solutions provider Qolcom have been working with the council on its BYOD solution.

Around 252 personal devices are now in use at the local authority, compared to just 74 personal mobiles and tablets in June 2012.

iPhones and iPads are proving particularly popular – the numbers jumped from 24 to 132 and 15 to 60 from 2012-2014 respectively.

According to John Jackson, Camden CIO, BYOD is part of a wider Agile strategy that includes other methods such as a paperless approach, laptop-by-default and embracing unified communications as the authority moves towards digital by default operation.

“Staff welcome being able to use their own devices and view Camden as a progressive organisation in this area and enjoy working in ways that reflect how they want to get things,” claimed Jackson.

“While it’s not a silver and it brings its own challenges in management and security, I believe the upside is greater than the downside,” he added.

Digital Innovation And Reduced Costs Behind BYOD

Jackson says that one of the main drivers behind BYOD adoption is cutting costs because it means money is saved by not spending money on staff devices and internal support.

Camden Council has adopted the attitude that it is essential for employees to be trained to deliver digital innovation.

“Camden needs to ensure staff are confident about digital technology and learn how it can deliver more efficient public services,” its policy document claims.

“The strategy intends to nurture its workforce by training staff in digital skills and sharing innovation and developments across services to accelerate changes and the emergence of new ideas,” it adds.
