Google Glass has finally landed at world football’s highest level after a member of Atletico Madrid’s coaching staff donned the wearable device during Saturday’s win over Getafe.

Assistant coach German ‘El Mono’ Burgos became the first person to use Google Glass during a match as the club remained top of the league following the 2-0 victory.

The gadget delivered real-time stats to the coach throughout the game that allowed him to monitor everything from the amount of shots and goals to possession and the fouls that had been committed by each side.

The service was developed by Google alongside the Liga de Futbol Profesional [LFP] and the stats delivered using an app called ‘Mediacoach’, according to Metro.

“The product allows the analysis of games in real time and the extraction of data from each game; clubs will have all the information about their own game, and of the sides they will face throughout the season,” LFP stated. “It will be the first time that Google Glass integrates such a useful footballing service.”

Google Glass has been available through its Explorer program for some time and is rumoured to be getting a consumer release at some point later on this year. Before then Google is opening up the Explorer program for one day only on 15 April from 0900 ET when the device will be on sale for $1,500 [£900] plus tax and can be bought in a preferred shade or frame. Those buying it also have to be from the US and an adult and the firm is “not quite ready to bring Glass to other countries.”

The only question that remains is whether Google will try to get Glass on a player before the season is out and manages to catch Diego Costa scoring the winner that wraps up Atletico’s first title since 1996.
