Humber NHS Foundation Trust Goes Mobile

The Humber NHS Foundation Trust has selected a new mobile solution which it selected via the G-Cloud framework.

Telecoms giant BT and mobile solutions provider TotalMobile will be working together to help the Trust transform patient care and the working lives of clinicians whilst saving money.

The new programme will give the Humber’s employees access to essential real-time information while on the move and help it moves towards a reduction in paper use.

Healthcare professionals can select a device of their choice, be it a tablet or a smartphone, and access patient records, schedules, appointments and notes while on their rounds.

The solution is set to replace paper records, in line with the Health Secretary’s paperless proposal, and streamline the Trust’s existing processes, reduce the need to return to the office and save time and money travelling as well as increasing the time clinicians can spend with patients.

The organisation is aiming to roll the project out to 500 healthcare professionals across multiple care settings in the first phase from June to September.

“Our Trust serves a population of over 600,000 over a large geographic area. With more than 3000 staff operating from 70 sites and many providing services in patients’ own homes, it was essential we were able to digitally capture information at the point of care,” explained Adrian Snarr, director of finance, infrastructure and informatics at the Trust.

“This mobile service allows our staff to gain instant secure access to the most up to date information stored on our electronic patient record (EPR) system. This means our community teams for example can plan their visits more efficiently and effectively to maximise their time with their patients.

“Using G-Cloud we were able to speed up the procurement process as a whole and keep costs down as we didn’t have to go to the expense of putting the contract out to tender,” Snarr added.

First Time Partnership

BT will be providing the Humber Trust with an end-to-end Wi-Fi, 3G and 4G mobile connectivity solution that integrates with the existing EPR system.

This incorporates workforce and work flow management and software from TotalMobile and marks the first time these two companies have worked together.

The project is partially funded by the Nursing Technology Fund which helps nurses, midwives and health visitors make better use of digital technology for improved patient outcomes.
