LGA Introduces Digital Hub For Local Councils

Apr 29, 2015

The Local Government Association (LGA) has launched Digital Councils, a hub designed to help local government with social media.

The initiative was introduced with the help of communications experts Comms2point0 and aims to provide guidance to those working at local councils.

The resource covers a wide range of elements related to social media from getting grips with social networks such as Twitter to building a digital strategy.

The digital hub includes a basic guide, 10 basic principles, “do’s and don’ts” and advice specifically related to Purdah.

The programme also features a myth buster section and hints and tips pages specially designed to reflect the range of different roles in a council, such as officers and councillors.

Catering For A Variety Skills Levels

The LGA says Digital Councils provides a way for it to work with a range of councils and councillors who are all moving different speeds.

“Many councils have already got to grips with social media and are using it to communicate with their residents about things like bin collections, weather warnings and road closures,” claimed LGA chairman Councillor David Sparks.

“Digital Councils will give council communications teams help and advice as they discuss how to develop their social media presence. Councillors and councils are working at different speeds and this resource will provide a hub so we can work with everyone and learn from each other.

“There are thousands of dedicated council staff across the country, who play a vital role in our communities. This guidance is designed to complement and enhance their tireless work, which will ultimately benefits the lives of our residents,” he added.
