Mobile App Of The Day: Google Docs & Google Sheets

May 15, 2014

This app of the day is really two apps of the day, or three if you count Google Drive. Confused? Okay, let me explain.

Google Drive has long been the one-stop shop for your Google-based productivity needs. But if you open the app now and try to get to a document or a spreadsheet you will only be allowed to view, and not to edit, that document or sheet.

If editing is what you want to do, then you will need to download Google Sheets or Google Docs as appropriate. Drive provides the links to do this and the process is painless if a bit of a faff. You'll have to do it with Slides too, at some point, but the app for that isn't ready yet.

As Google explains on its own blog, there is offline support included, and this is great news. It means you can create documents or spreadsheets at any time, and upload them when you are able. Also, having separate apps might just mean they develop in ways more appropriate to documents, spreadsheets and presentations than a single catch-all app is capable of. Oh, and you can still use Drive as well.
