New Microsoft CEO Seeks To Unify His Company

Feb 24, 2014

In an interview with the New York Times, new Microsoft chief Satya Nadella has revealed he intends to “discover the new formula” for leadership within the firm.

Speaking to the newspaper, he claimed the biggest lesson his predecessor Steve Ballmer taught him was that the context of their roles as CEO differs from each other greatly.

It seems this different context has caused Nadella to question the purpose of his leadership team and make some changes to the way the IT giant functions internally.

“The framework we came up with is the notion that [the management team’s] purpose is to bring clarity, alignment and intensity,” said the new leader to the paper.

“Culturally, I think we have operated as if we had the formula figured out, and it was all about optimising, in its various constituent parts, the formula.

“So the question is: how do we take the intellectual capital of 130,000 people and innovate where none of the category definitions of the past will matter?” he added.

Nadella has made it clear he intends to break down the faction way of thinking that currently seems to dominate Microsoft, calling any organisational structures pre-his leadership “irrelevant.”

In the interview, the former Sun Microsystems veteran claims he will be “recognising innovation and fostering its growth” in his new role – adding that he will not dismiss even the smallest part of his new $70bn operation because that tiny percentage “may just be the most relevant project the company is working on.”

The imminent new Microsoft CEO also added he believes the role of a leader is to bolster their team’s confidence and to do this he will be evaluating his team members collectively, rather than individually.
