Nottinghamshire County Council Set To Save Millions

Dec 05, 2014

Nottinghamshire County Council has signed a contract to improve its Wide Area Network (WAN), which it predicts will save taxpayers £4m over the duration of the agreement.

Virgin Media Business (VMB) will be working with the local authority over a five-year period to help it link up with the Public Services Network (PSN) and work more easily with other government bodies.

VMB claims schools are also set to benefit from the network, which will allow council employees to work collaboratively across more than 500 sites.

Those signed up to the service will gain access to improved security systems that include URL filtering and a more sophisticated Firewall intended to protect students from inappropriate content.

“It’s important for local authorities to ensure that their infrastructure works to fulfil their needs now and in the future,” claimed executive director of sales at the firm Mario di Mascio.

“By utilising the emCloud PSN, the council has done the double: saved its residents substantial amounts of cash and improved its infrastructure to ensure it meets future demands,” he added.

Delivering Despite Budget Shortfalls

“Faced with a three-year, £77m budget shortfall we’re looking at every opportunity to do things differently to drive out savings and improve services for local taxpayers,” claimed Nottinghamshire’s Ivor Nicholson.

“Investing in new technologies will allow us to deliver more efficient ways of working and much better collaboration between organisations in the region.

“The adaptability of the network represents a big step in digital innovation for the East Midlands. We’re excited to see the benefits the improved PSN network will bring to the county’s residents,” he added.
