Roadworks Site Set For Re-Launch

The national traffic and roadworks website Roadworks.org is being re-launched with a new mobile-friendly design and more information for road users and highways professionals.

The new website displays live congestion information, live incidents, road closures and diversion routes, temporary traffic restrictions and major public events.

It has also been linked with Transport API, allowing it to display live bus and train departure information.

The website was founded in 2003 as a method of local authorities publishing statutory roadworks information in anticipation of the Traffic Management Act, recently evolving into a national integrated traffic information hub.

Live feeds from Google, the national highways agencies of England, Wales and Scotland, regional transport authorities in London and Greater Manchester are all used on Roadworks.org.

Of the 175 local highway authorities in England and Wales responsible for managing the most significant road closures and other disruptions affecting travellers, 169 contribute to the website as well.  

On the new mobile-friendly Roadworks.org, live images from “jam cam” traffic cameras and live information on roadside signs across the country will be displayed, with local authorities also contributing information from traffic management control centres.

Elgin Responsible For Website

Roadworks information firm Elgin, which manages the website, claims over 40 local councils are currently using the system to manage and publicise live road closures, diversion routes and other temporary traffic interventions.

In these areas, it says, the site has become the single authoritative source of disruptions affecting road users and local residents.

A new planning function has also been added to Roadworks.org to allow users to plan trips with options for both driving and public transport.
