Cyber Security Lessons Starting For Children 11+

The government announced today its plans for increasing cyber security skills within the nation, including special learning materials for 11-14 year-olds and higher-level and advanced apprenticeships.

The news comes as part of a report entitled “The Cyber Security Skills: Business Perspectives and Government’s Next Steps,” which outlines intentions to provide training for teachers which will enable them to educate students on protecting themselves online.

The new initiatives go beyond high school and stretch to university level. Support will be offered to higher education institutions that create innovative proposals that will improve teaching on Internet safety.

“Today countries that can manage cyber security risks have a clear competitive advantage,” claimed David Willets, universities and science minister.

“By ensuring cyber security is integral to education at all ages, we will help equip the UK with the professional and technical skills we need for long-term economic growth,” he added.

Suggestions in the report were gathered by talking to businesses employing digital security experts about how their evolving needs could be met.

Other ideas in the study included:

·         e-skills UK will roll-out their Secure Futures campaign in London, Greater Manchester and Sussex

·         a new e-skills UK cyber security internship scheme that will allow students to gain relevant work experience

·         support for a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) allow a large audience to receive training in the area

·         developing a certification progress for Master degree in cyber security

·         support for activities to inspire more people to consider a career in cyber security.

The Cyber Security Skills Alliance welcomed the new plans.

“It is clear from this and our own research that the national shortage of cyber skills is a key issue for businesses and government in the fight against the growing threat from cyber-crime,” claimed Sir David Pepper, representing the Alliance.

“We will work closely with the government and industry in support of this programme, in particular to help establish career paths in cyber security and improve recruitment and training,” he added.
