Data Centres To Be Transformed By Internet Of Things

The Internet of Things (IoT) is placing extra pressure on data centres as they now need to provide additional security, capacity and analytics challenges, according to research that reveal billions of “things” will be online by 2020.

According to Fabrizio Biscotti, researcher at IT advisory company Gartner, the data centre market will be worth $300bn (£181bn) by 2020 as a result of the transformations that will occur within data centres.

“IoT deployments will generate large quantities of data that need to be processed and analysed in real time,” he claimed.

Real time analysis of huge volumes of data will need to be processed as sensors, gadgets and other devices all become hooked up to the Internet.

Biscotti says the IoT will create a data stream between remote assets and a centralised management system. This will allow the integration of new and old organisational processes that can then be used to provide information on location, status and functionality.

His research – The Impact of the Internet of Things on Data Centres – reveals that this real-time information enables more accuracy and optimised usage.

The researcher claims that this is why data centres will be needed, they will need to implement more forward-thinking capacity management and the new systems will present challenges for staff.

He says the biggest problem is backup. Suitable backup could be unaffordable and more demands will be placed on data processing because the right data needs to be sifted and sorted.

Prime Minister David Cameron announced earlier this month that he would be granting additional funding to further the IoT.
