DCMS Set To Rethink Digital Infrastructure

Aug 11, 2014

The Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and HM Treasury are launching a consultation into the UK’s digital communications infrastructure.

A 2013 DCMS report, Connectivity, Content and Consumers: Britain’s digital platform for growth, argued that the UK needs a longer-term digital communications infrastructure strategy.

A new document aims to identify the next keys steps and actions points for delivery, such as the role government has to play, the regulatory framework, encouraging private sector investment and how the country can take advantage of the potential growth in the global communications industry.

“Digital technology is transforming all our lives and as it advances, it will continue to offer previously unthinkable options for communications individually and in business,” claim Ed Vaizey, Minister for Digital Industries, and Lord Deighton, Commercial Secretary to the Treasury in the report’s introduction.

According to the document, the government is committed to making the UK “the best connected country in the world.”

Work Already In Progress

It highlights activity already taking place, such as the Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) project that aims to see 95% of the population with access to superfast Internet by 2017.

The report also notes that £150m has been invested to improve mobile coverage across the UK to benefit parts that have been traditionally hard to reach.

The government’s consultation on improving British digital infrastructure began on 6th August and will continue until 1st October.

The consultation is public and open to all citizens, who have been asked to answer questions that appear in the report or a simplified survey.
