DVLA Sponsors Digital Services Initiative TechHub Swansea

Nov 17, 2014

The DVLA has announced it will be sponsoring TechHub Swansea, a community and workspace for technology entrepreneurs in the area.

The sponsorship will see the DVLA working with local businesses, suppliers, customers and universities to design and develop digital services over a two year programme.

According to the Agency, the partnership is part of its strategy to develop and attract digital talent.

It intends on becoming part of a network that will work together in a unique environment, sharing resources, knowledge, experience and workspace.

The DVLA claims this is a “completely” new way for a government agency to harness the skills and knowledge in the local tech community and hopes this will assist in the provision of excellent digital services.

The Agency will have space at the TechHub offices in Swansea, which are also home to six technology start-up companies.

It intends to use the sponsorship to gain access to the digital skills held by graduates tech start-up “gurus” to improve its own public services, as well as sharing its own knowledge and experience to mentor start-ups in their projects.

The DVLA will also be offering placements and projects to undergraduates, with an overall aim of reducing its reliance on large IT suppliers for all of its services and to reduce operating costs.

Benefits For Swansea

TechHub Swansea co-founder Adam Curtis has welcomed the DVLA sponsorship, with the Agency serving as one of Swansea’s largest employers, he believes the investment will serve to strengthen the wider technology sector in and around the city.

“The overall vision of TechHub Swansea is to develop a strong cluster of technology in the Swansea Bay City Region,” Curtis claimed.

“The aim is for software development to be one of the main areas of employment in the region,” he added.
