DWP Appoints Director General For Technology

Sep 03, 2014

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has replaced the CIO (chief information officer) role, opting instead for a director general of technology.

Previous DWP CIO Andy Nelson stepped down from his position in March this year after spending just over a year in the Department.

Former Morgan Stanley managing director of wealth and asset management technology Mayank Prakash has now been appointed as director general of technology.

Prior to joining the financial services company, Prakash led IT, security and digital business transformation at business software provider Sage.

In his new role, he will be expected to take responsibility for IT services in the Department, ensuring that technology supports current and new digital services.

“I am delighted to have been asked to join DWP. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to simplify welfare by transforming one of the UK’s largest IT estates to deliver easy to use digital services,” claimed Prakash.

“It is a professional privilege to improve how the government delivers services to 22 million citizens,” he added.

The news has also been welcomed by his new colleagues in the Department, including its permanent secretary Robert Devereux.

“I am delighted to welcome Mayank Prakash to the Department. Mayank has a wealth of experience in leading the technology and business transformation. His expertise will prove invaluable to the Department,” he claimed.

Prakash Has Led “Large Scale Digital Transformation”

Such experience includes leading large scale transformation for complex, global multi-channel retail financial services and telecoms businesses.

Prakash also has experience in market-leading digital initiatives, implementing online services, mobile apps and big data analytics integrating with social platforms.
