Government Claims UK Broadband Takes European Lead

The government has today announced that broadband services in the country are the best in the EU’s five biggest economies, citing communications regulator Ofcom’s European Broadband Scorecard.

According to the report, Britain leads in most areas measured, including coverage, take-up, usage and choice for both mobile and fixed broadband, as well as performing well on price.

The most recent data reveals that the country has a broadband take-up rate of 83%, 77% of people have bought goods online and only 8% of people have never used the Internet. The UK also has the highest weekly usage of the Internet in the EU countries included in the study.

This has taken the country from third to first for coverage among the “EU5” (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK).  The availability has superfast Internet in Britain has increased from 60% at the end of 2011 to 73% now.

“As part of the government’s long-term economic plan, broadband in the UK is going through a remarkable transformation,” claimed Ed Vaizey, communications minister.

“The rollout of superfast broadband is accelerating – Britons already do more business online than any other European country, and the news that we now have the best superfast coverage of all five leading European economies is testament to the progress made to date,” he added.

UK government currently has a large commitment the digital world: besides a “Digital by Default” standard and the Broadband Delivery UK project, Prime Minister David Cameron has now announced £45m of funding for research into the Internet of Things.
