More NHS Trusts Choosing VNA Solutions
Four NHS Trusts have recently selected a Vendor Neutral Archive (VNA) content platform as a standards-based route for next generation patient data handling.
The healthcare organisations have opted for a solution which is based on the Enterprise Content Management System (ECMS) Documentum from EMC Corporation and provided by content management firm SynApps Solutions.
The four Trusts are Croydon Health Services NHS Trust, London’s Kingston Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust and Northampton General Hospital.
At Croydon, clinicians are using the VNA to drive paperless initiatives and eventually store all kinds of patient information within the system, not just image-based data.
According to staff at Croydon Health Services, the open source, non-proprietary nature of the SynApps VNA is a huge advantage that removes previous limitations.
Meanwhile, at Kingston, the VNA is enabling better sharing of patient information and radiology images and the end goal is a “master patient record” which will allow healthcare staff to access all patient data from digital imaging and communications from various departments to general medical information.
At Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust, the VNA will initially include PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) images but will grow over time.
“Our new SynApps on-site VNA has a zero-footprint viewer, which means clinicians and ultimately patients can look at images on any device, including tablets,” claimed deputy director of ICT at Northampton Christina Malcolmson.
“At the moment, that’s just PACS images – but we will grow it and include other images and documents, so we can have a full EPR over time,” she added.
