Siemens Hires Record Number Of UK Apprentices

Global engineering and technology services company Siemens has announced it has created 160 new apprenticeships this year, a 10% increase on last year.

Currently, the firm has more than 400 apprentices on its longstanding programme. These cover all four sectors in the organisation: energy, industry, healthcare and infrastructure and cities.

“We have a longstanding and highly successful apprenticeship scheme, which is integral to our approach to training and developing our engineers and leaders of the future,” claims Toby Peyton-Jones, Siemens HR director.

“Apprenticeships truly deliver results – for the employer, for the apprentice and above all for the economy and society as part of overall industrial strategy to provide well-trained and industry-ready employees,” he added.

Opportunities will be available at the firm’s new rail training academy, a collaborative development between the company, National Skills Academy for Railway Engineering and the Employer Ownership of Skills pilot programme fund.

According to Siemens, the construction and subsequent operation of the centre will create 100 new jobs.

Besides a large apprentice programme, the company has also launched the Siemens Education Portal.

The firm claims that the engineering sector finds it challenging to attract new employees and so created this portal, which will be rolled out to 5000 schools, to inspire interest in an engineering career.

This news comes during National Apprenticeship Week, which business secretary Vince Cable claims is off to a great start.
