Tech City UK Launches Digital Business Academy
Tech City UK, an organisation that aims to support the Silicon Roundabout tech cluster in East London, has launched a Digital Business Academy.
The organisation claims the course to be the world first government-funded digital skills course and has been released in partnership with University College London (UCL).
The programme aims to help fix the UK’s digital skills gap after reports suggested that an additional 754,000 digitally skilled workers will be needed in the UK by 2013 and 2017.
The Academy is a massive open online course (MOOC) that brings together resources from industry experts and educational institutions.
It will be offered free to anyone in the UK and partners include the BBC, Twitter, O2, Microsoft Ventures and social video advertising platform Unruly.
Scheme Backed By Prime Minister
The scheme been praised by Prime Minister David Cameron who claimed it will help “reinforce the UK’s position as leading the digital economy.”
“Whether you are a mother returning to workplace or a new graduate full of ideas, securing top-notch digital and technical skills is essential,” claimed Tech City UK chair Baroness Joanna Shields.
“The Digital Business Academy will open up digital careers to people irrespective of age, background or pre-qualifications,” she added.
Members of the Digital Business Academy will not only receive access to the course, but will also have the opportunity to receive desk space, fast tracked internship applications and further training.
Eight courses will be available through the scheme, ranging from ‘Size up your idea’ to ‘Master finance for your business.”
Three courses are offered by the Cambridge Judge Business School, two via CL and three by Founder Centric, which designs and teaches top tier start-up education.
Coding will not be an Academy focus and instead will focus on business development, marketing and finance aspects of working in tech business.
Tech City UK CEO Gerard Grech claims the programme is designed to complement coding initiatives that already exist.
