UK Workers May See More Flexibility From 30th June

New research indicates that there will soon be a dramatic shift in attitudes to flexible working across the UK.

According to a paper published by LogMeIn, most Britons are ready to embrace the new style of work when fresh legislation comes into force on 30 June. The bill will give employees (with at least 26 weeks of service) the right to make requests for more flexible working conditions.

The survey threw up a large handful of talking points.

Workers across the UK appear to favour an early start, with 48 per cent of respondents saying that they would prefer to start before 9am. Just 34 per cent of participants said that they like the traditional 9-5 grind.

As things stand, 40 per cent of workers aren't offered flexible working benefits by their employers. 23 per cent and 18 per cent currently have the option to work remotely and change their working hours, respectively.

What's more, less than a quarter of respondents (24 per cent) said that they plan to offer less rigid working conditions after 30 June, while 11 per cent say that they will introduce mobile working technology to their companies for the first time ever. A massive 40 per cent don't intend to change anything.

"The days of working 9 to 5 in a physical office are waning," said LogMeIn's Stephen Duignan. "Thousands of time-poor Brits are working increasingly diverse hours and in a wide range of locations, with many workers starting early and/or putting in hours away from the office to balance personal and professional commitments."

"Our research suggests that more than half of workers would like to strike a greater work/life balance by taking advantage of flexible working, which means employers need to consider the benefits and the technology needed in order to offer staff the ability to do so."

Interestingly, over three times as many workers in London are allowed to clock in at 10am, compared to the national average.
