Young UK Entrepreneur Raises $1m for ‘Ultimate Revision App’

Education Apps, a start-up by 21 year old Londoner and University drop-out George Burgess, has secured $1m in funding from venture capital firm Index Ventures and the founders of Innocent Drinks.

Burgess is one of the youngest people that Index Ventures, backers of companies including SoundCloud, Etsy and Just-Eat, has ever invested in.  

Education Apps began in 2009 after a then 17 year old Burgess created an app to help fellow students at his school prepare for a GCSE in Geography.

Since then, his company has produced a further 100+ apps to aid education, including the BBC Bitesize GCSE revision apps for iOS. This happened alongside him passing his A-Levels, experiencing a gap year and joining, then quitting university.

This week he intends to launch the new Gojimo app, an all-in-one app that aims to help students their exams. It features content suitable for most British and American secondary school qualifications.

Having originally been a third party developer working for well-known education clients and publishers like Hodder Education, Education Apps will now focus solely on Gojimo.

Speaking to the press, Burgess said: “We’ve seen mobiles and tablet revolutionise every part of our lives, except for education. Gojimo changes that.”

Besides students, teachers and schools will also be able to use the app to track the progress of their students.

While the app itself is downloadable for free, study guides, textbooks and revision resources will be available as in-app purchases, which will be available in bulk for institutions.

Leading academic publishers McGraw-Hill and Oxford University Press are said to have provided content for the app.
