Learning a new skill no longer needs to be expensive and it doesn’t require travelling to a distant city. In fact, you can learn from the comfort of your own home. Here are our top picks for websites where you can learn a new skill affordably – some are even free!
Lynda
Lynda is a site owned by business social network LinkedIn dedicated to providing online courses you can pursue in your own time. It covers a variety of topics which could be useful to you as a business owner, including coding, marketing, design and photography. You can sign up for a free 30 day trial – a great option if there’s one particular course you’re interested in – and after that, there are a number of different paid plans.
Skillshare
Skillshare is another website which offers a variety of online courses for you to study in your own time. Watch videos on a variety of useful subjects, such as business, entrepreneurship, writing and design. Skillshare often offers new users the first three months for $0.99 and after that, you can choose a plan to suit you.
Udemy
Udemy is slightly different from Lynda and Skillshare in that you pay for individual courses you’d like to take, rather than choosing a subscription plan where you can take all the courses you’d like as long as you’re a paying member. There are over 55,000 courses available on the site that cover a wide range of useful and interesting subjects.
Alison
Alison is a great option for those of you who’d like to learn a new skill for free. Alison offers thousands of courses on a huge range of topics for free. Users can also pay a small fee for a certificate once they’ve finished their course.
FutureLearn
FutureLearn is brought to you by the Open University. Like Alison, courses here are free but you can pay to upgrade to receive benefits like certificates for completing your course. The courses on FutureLearn also begin and end at set times but many courses are repeated, so if you miss one, you can sign up for a later date.
