Aberdeen Becomes Scotland’s First Gigabit City

Sep 03, 2014

Aberdeen is now home to Scotland’s first Gigabit City – a project that aims to provide areas in need with fibre network infrastructure.

The Gigabit City project is run by network infrastructure provider CityFibre and in Aberdeen, it is collaborating with Scottish ICT service provider Internet for Business (IFB).

CityFibre claims it has a modern digital infrastructure that will bring transformational gigabit speeds to over 6000 companies and public sector sites including schools, universities, libraries, hospitals and government agency buildings in the city.

The firm has been working with IFB to underpin the multi-million pound investment in Aberdeen and plans to upgrade and migrate hundreds of business customers to the new infrastructure.

“We are hugely excited to see CityFibre and IFB bring this project to life ensuring that Aberdeen city and shire have next generation digital infrastructure in place to further economic growth over the coming years,” claimed the city’s council leader Jenny Laing.

“CityFibre’s decision to make Aberdeen a Gigabit City helps us to realise the ambition laid out in Accelerate Aberdeen of being at the leading edge of the digital revolution, with the world-class connectivity essential for continued growth and helps lay the foundations for significant improvements for residential customers in the future,” she added.

Accelerate Aberdeen is the city’s plan for improving broadband speeds in the area and enhancing Internet capabilities.

Project “Essential” For Aberdeen’s Growth

CityFibre says its project is “critical” for the Scottish city as it has the second highest broadband take-up rate in the UK but lacks cable infrastructure.

It believes Aberdeen is now poised to become the best digitally connected city in Scotland.
