GDS To Improve Insight Into Technology Leaders Network

The Government Digital Service (GDS) has started to blog about the meetings of the Technology Leaders Network (TLN) in an attempt to give a better insight into the organisation’s process and decisions.

GDS introduced TLN in November last year. The group was actually established in October 2013 with the aim of leading technology across government and ensuring it is equipped with the right technology to deliver high quality digital services.

GDS runs the Network, which is made up of a Departmental Technology Leaders from each main government Department, as well as Leaders from each of the Devolved Administrations.

In the most recent TLN meeting, government deputy chief technology officer (CTO) Magnus Falk, who is also Chair of the group, talked about the progress being made in mobilising the next phase of Common Technology Services (CTS).

The Office of the CTO (OCTO) began developing CTS because it wanted to apply its user needs led approach to the technology used by civil servants.

Falk has claimed that the results of CTS will be technology that better meets user needs for higher productivity, technology that enables more cost effective collaboration across government and technology that is lower cost.

PSN And HMRC Updates

The Public Services Network (PSN) was also discussed at the most recent TLN meeting, where a PSN representative presented the new Network Principles.

These sit alongside previous principles that were published with CESG covering End User Devices and Cloud Services and intend to formalise the flexibility Departments have to choose the right network solutions to match their individual needs.

James Duncan, PSN CTO, also attended the session to update attendees on the Security Network Analysis Platform project which GDS says is closely related to the PSN but run independently by OCTO in partnership with CERT UK.

The Platform aims to generate better, more timely information on cyber threats to government by centrally aggregating and analysing attack data that is already being collected individually by Departments, agencies and local authorities.

It has also been revealed that HMRC has introduced new cloud based collaboration tools whilst also working through all the potential information risk issues.
