Government Hybrid Cloud Launched By Vodafone

British telecoms company Vodafone has announced the launch of its Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) cloud computing system specifically aimed the UK public sector.

The new platform, available April 2014, will enable government organisations in the country to meet the “restricted” Impact Level Three (IL3) requirements, according to the firm.

Vodafone says its “Flexible Computing for Government” hybrid cloud offering has fixed and mobile capabilities, allowing it to be deployed quickly and flexibly.

It says this will allow organisations in the public sector to meet the government’s “Cloud First” ICT strategy.

The service is said to be scalable, with the ability to support long-term projects and short-term needs, allowing users to prevent unnecessary capital expenditure.

Vodafone was also recently announced as one of the providers of the Public Service Network (PSN) and is therefore able to deliver a secure multi-tenant infrastructure with end-to-end connectivity over the PSN.  

It says its new solution is a practical way of accessing the benefits of the cloud.

“It allows organisations to embrace a mix of managed and co-location services, which are protected by the government-grade security credentials that [our] data centre network provides,” said Vodafone.

“The public sector is experiencing a significant shift in the way computing resources are procured and delivered,” added Matt Key, the company’s director of large enterprise.

“[Our] public sector experience, which includes delivering the “restricted” NHSmail service, means we have developed a service that addresses this market, delivering scalable computing in a flexible and cost efficient way,” he claimed.

The service will be provided on a “pay as you go” basis, so organisations will be billed by the hour. The firm claims this enables users to adapt data requirements according to changing circumstances and only ever pay for what is used.
