Socitm Launches Women In IT Digital Initiative
Socitm, the association for IT and digital professionals working in local public services, is set to launch an initiative that aims to support women and promote their advancement in the sector.
Wednesday 23rd September will see the organisation launch Socitm Women in IT at a half-day event taking place The View in London EC4.
Socitm president Nadira Hussain will be leading an array of female IT leaders speaking at the event after making it clear her number one priority in this role is to advance the prospects of women in IT and ensure their access to advancement and leadership roles.
Speakers at the launch will include Labour MP Chi Onwurah, the former shadow minister for digital government.
The new programme comes after research published by the British Computer Society, The Chartered Institute for IT and the Tech Partnership claimed that just one in ten IT directors are women.
Furthermore, only 17% of the 1.18 million IT specialists working in the UK in 2014 were women, in comparison with a figure of 475 for the workforce as a whole.
“Socitm is a great platform for creating a network through which the interests and visibility of women can be advanced both in public and private sectors,” claimed Hussain.
“Events like this will start improving the visibility of women both within the Society and more widely to provide support and encouragement for them to progress their careers.
“Their visible success will encourage more young women to consider IT/digital as a good career choice and make the movement self-sustaining,” she added.
