An increasing number of internet users prefer to use their smartphones to browse and shop, and Google actively favours websites that are mobile friendly. It can become very costly to have a website that only looks good on a limited number of devices.

Responsive design vs. mobile website

A separate mobile website and responsive design are not necessarily the same thing. Generally, a mobile website is an entirely new site developed and designed just for smartphones. It often has limited content and features in comparison with the desktop version of the website. In comparison, a responsive site is a single website that adapts to the size of the device it is viewed on, whether that device is a computer, smartphone or tablet. It removes the need to have different sites for different devices and allows your visitors the full experience no matter what device they are using. It can also reduce the need to develop separate mobile apps.

Your customers are changing the way they shop

One third of eCommerce sales are now happening on mobile devices, up from just 12% in 2012, and over half of all eCommerce traffic comes from mobile devices. Website traffic from smartphones and tablets is now so prevalent that it doesn’t make sense to have a website that doesn’t respond to the variety of different screen resolutions mobile devices can have. If your site is difficult to browse on a phone, your potential customers will find a company with a website that suits their browsing habits instead.

It’s better for SEO

Last year, Google announced it would be using mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal in search results, rewarding websites that are fully optimised for mobile platforms. If you want people to be able to easily find your business online, it is essential to adapt your website’s design to be responsive to ensure you rank well in search results.

Responsive sites are cost effective

Having one website that responds to a range of different devices rather than a different website for desktop users and another for mobile users creates a unified approach to management, support and upgrades for your site, saving time and money. Responsive sites also tend to have more longevity than websites that only look good on one device because they can adapt to any devices that become popular in the future.

Your customers prefer having a website that matches their needs

Google’s Think Insights found that if a visitor has a positive experience with your mobile website, they are 67% more likely to buy a product or use a service. On the other hand, if they land on your mobile website and become frustrated with what they find, there is a 61% chance they will leave and go to a different website. Without customers, you don’t have a business, so it makes sense to develop a website they will enjoy using.
